A tech follows the wet trail back up: the relief valve, a circulator flange gasket, a threaded fitting that's thinned out over thirty winters, or a seam in the block itself that has started to weep under pressure. Pressure matters here. If the gauge rises every single time the burner lights, the expansion tank has usually taken on water and lost the air cushion that absorbs expansion, which forces the relief valve open and makes an innocent valve look like the culprit. In a home that runs its heat hard for seven or eight months a year, that cycle repeats thousands of times before anybody spots the puddle.
